The Giving Tree

 Story Gardens

quote

"Once there was a tree... and it loved a little boy. And every day the boy would come and he would gather its leaves and make them into crowns and play king of the forest."

Artist Buki Schwartz created a group of large-scale metal sculptures inspired by The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. The sculptures are located in the old public park at the corner of Hoffien and Weizmann Streets.

The series of sculpted trees consists of giant metal pipes painted red; a mirror is attached to the end of every tree branch, thereby reflecting surrounding nature. The eight sculptures describe the process the tree undergoes in the story and the results of the relationship the tree has with the boy. Landscape architect Bruce Levin planned the remodeling of the park
