The parents of Moshe Rom immigrated to Eretz Israel in the 1930’s. In 1935 they were among the first settlers in the Agrobank neighborhood. Moshe was born on October 13, 1938 in a two-storey stone dwelling on 33 Shenkar Street. Recruited into the army, he served in the training division and participated as a reservist in the Six Days War. He studied law and served as a military prosecutor as well as in other capacities. He was elected a member of the city council and headed the opposition on the council. In 1989, personal elections were held for the first time and he was elected to serve as Holon's mayor. He simultaneously served as Deputy Head of the Local Authories of Israel. During his four years in office, the city’s appearance was vastly improved: the Sycamore tree – the emblem of Holon – at the northern approach to the city was lit up. Lawns, decorative areas, and pergolas were added to Kugel Boulevard. The central squares were renovated. Recognition for these accomplishments was made in 1993 when Holon was awarded “five stars for beauty” by the Council for a Beautiful Israel. In the field of education, a municipal program of incentive was begun – “Education ‘90”; sums were allotted from the municipal budget as well as from the budget of the Ministry of Education to improve conditions for pupils and teachers in the schools. Following the elections of 1993, Moshe Rom returned to his vocation as a lawyer and lives today with his family in Holon.
