Design Museum Holon (DMH)

Design Museum HolonDesign Museum Holon, housed in an iconic building designed by Ron Arad Associates, is a high point in the effort spearheaded by Mayor Moti Sasson and Managing Director Hana Hertsman to transform Holon into an influential cultural and educational center. Design Museum Holon joins The Mediatheque, a unique cultural hub, featuring a number of institutions: a library, a theatre, a cinematheque and museums.

The museum is a major milestone in the journey to put the discussion and exploration of design on the public agenda, and to incorporate design into the fabric of Holon’s urban life. Design is expected to be one of Israel’s main export industries in the coming years, which is why Holon believes that promoting this field should be a national priority. Mayor Sasson and Ms. Hertsman therefore turned to Ron Arad, a world-renowned designer and architect, and asked his firm to design a structure that would immerse visitors in the world of design, and also become an instantly recognizable city landmark.

Design Museum HolonSince opening in March 2010, Design Museum Holon has become an active international center for design innovation, exposing the design process and narrative through its education division, conducting creative workshops and organizing meetings with curators and designers. The museum's aim is to create, sustain and lead an active design forum that examines and presents design innovations from Israel and the world, and which will also influence international design

Design Museum HolonBy creating a comprehensive design experience for the general public, Design Museum Holon is raising awareness regarding the effect of design on the environment while developing a productive dialogue between designers and the public. To achieve this, it will conduct comprehensive examinations of various design mediums in an urban setting, making Holon a test case on an international scale.

The distinctive museum building, designed by Ron Arad Associates, has a unique, sinuous steel ribbon facade, and is itself a prime example of wondrous design. Indeed, within a year of the opening, the building was named one of the new wonders of the world by the prestigious magazine Conde Nast Traveler.

The sculptural external envelope, made of weathering-steel (Corten) bands, encloses the building and marks the meandering walkways within it. The visitor follows a route that is partly under open sky and partly in undulating pathways between galleries and interior spaces.

The museum structure includes two galleries for temporary exhibitions, an archive, the design lab-an education workroom and offices. The museum also includes a unique Materials Library which is located in the nearby Mediatheque.
